Bud, Not Buddy final project

Part 1: Suitcase Activity

After reading Bud, Not Buddy, we learned how important Bud's suitcase full of personal treasures was to him. These items told about who he was and where he came from. You will make a connection to the text with this part of the project. 

1. Decorate/Illustrate the folder given to you to represent a suitcase, like Bud's.

2. Choose 5 items from home that you cherish and would keep with you if you were Bud Caldwell.

3. With each item, you must include a small artifact representing the item. (ex: a photo, an illustration, a flat object to represent the item)

4. With each item, you must answer the following questions into a thoughtful paragraph using complete sentences: 

• What is the item you have chosen to include?
• Why is this item so special to you?
• How does this item represent who you are or where you came from?
• Why would you not want to be without this special treasure?

Part 2: Rules to Live By

As we read in the story, Bud likes to make up rules to live by. You will get to create your own "rules to live by."

You must write 3-5 rules. Remember to refer to the book if you need examples of how Bud created his rules.  We will put all of our "rules" together and make a class book.

Simple Salt Dough

You can use this recipe for making a "clay" to build things on the inside of your pyramid.

Ingredients:
1 cup salt
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup luke warm water

Directions
1. In a large bowl mix salt and flour.
2. Gradually stir in water. Mix well until it forms a doughy consistency.
3. With your hands form a ball with your dough and kneed it for at least 5 minutes. The longer you kneed your dough the smoother it will be.
Store your salt dough in a air tight container and you will be able to use it for days.
You can paint your creations with acrylic paints and seal with varnish or polyurethane spray.
You can let your salt dough creations air dry, however salt dough can also be dried in the oven. Bake at 200 F until your creation is dry. The amount of time needed to bake your creations depends on size and thickness; thin flat objects may only take 45-60 minutes, thicker creations can take 2-3 hours or more. You can increase your oven temperature to 350 F, your dough will dry faster but it may also brown, which won't matter if you are painting your entire creation (you can also cover your dough in the oven before it turns brown).
There are a few options to color your salt dough: 1. Add powdered tempera paint to your flour, 2. add food coloring or paint to the water before you mix it with the salt/flour, or 3. add natural coloring like instant coffee, cocoa, or curry powder.

101 (sort of) Dalmations

Today we won second place in the school costume contest...but I think we can all agree these costumes (and acting skills) warranted a first place prize!

This Wednesday!

This Wednesday in 6th grade we will eat, drink, and be scary! Get it? :)

Our Halloween party will begin at 2:00P.M in the front U where we will watch K-2 grades parade in their costumes! We of course will shock the rest of the school in our "secret" costumes.

We will then return to our classroom at 2:30 for some treats and a short movie. Parents are more than welcome to join us in any festivities beginning at 2:00P.M!
